Traffic Master Flooring:

Installing Traffic Master Flooring

Preparation Work

Traffic Master flooring is ideal if you want a nice hardwood floor for any room of your home. It’s available at Home Depot, and other hardware stores, and can be installed using a few basic tools. Of course, step one is preparing the room before the traffic master flooring is put in place. So, make sure the area is clean: sweep up all dust and dirt, get rid of any grease, paint, or other stains, and be sure it’s dry. Also, the floor has to be relatively flat.

Any large bumps, sand need to be ground away. And if there are any holes or low spots, you need to fill them with leveling compound. Be sure it’s cement-based, and has at least a 3,000 psi rating. Also, you want the sub floor to be structurally sound. If it’s wood, tap down any loose spots. After all, you don’t want your traffic master flooring to squeak.

Next, undercut any door casings in the room. You need to be able to slip the individual traffic master flooring members into place. Finally, if the room has any types of trim and/or molding: quarter round, doorway threshold, show molding etc. you need to remove it.

The First Piece is Important

There’s an old saying: “Well begun is half done”. With traffic master flooring, that is quite true. You want to get that first piece laid right. So, measure the width of the room. Then, divide that number by the width of the traffic master flooring planks. It’s doubtful you’re going to come out with an even number of planks, meaning you’re going to have to cut some. The important point here is this: you don’t want the last row of planks to be thinner than two inches wide. So, if you have to cut them smaller than that, take the amount you have to cut, divide it in two, and take that dimension off the first and last row.

The First 3 Rows Establish the Base

Starting in a corner, place the first plank with the tongue toward the wall. Hopefully, the room is square. If not, you’ll have to trim the edge of the plank to follow the line of the room. It’s also important to place the spacers along the wall at two to three foot internals. The traffic master flooring will expand and contract with changes in heat and temperature; so you don’t want it to warp.

Once the first row is in place, place the tongue of the next plank in the grove of the first at about a thirty degree angle, and tap gently into place with a hammer. In this manner, all the rows are put in place. With the final row, you may have to tap it down into position at the other wall’s edge. After that, put the molding in, and your traffic master flooring is done.
